16 Rules Every ALPHA Must Follow

Never miss a glorious update - click here!

Print It Out, Memorize It, Own It

In the last post, we covered the 7 Traits of the Alpha. The traits are high ideals to aspire to, but they’re fairly ethereal; that is, they’re more “think” than they are “do.”

And so today, we’d like to share some “do” stuff–practical, actionable things that you can and should do on your quest to become Alpha. We’ve created 16 rules that guide the behavior of an Alpha; rules that help you navigate the world and help an Alpha to do all the things Alphas do–like ride dragons, help kids with their homework, and restore balance to the Force.

Put in the simplest way possible, by following the Alpha Rules, you will develop the Alpha Traits.

Seems pretty awesome, right? Of course. And we figured that the only way to make incredible, useful information even more awesome was to make it pretty to look at.

To that end, we proudly present the very first Engineering the Alpha INFOGRAPHIC!

 15Alpha(click to enlarge)

Now, in the title of this post, you’ll notice we said 16 Rules, and the infographic only displays 15.

What’s the 16th rule? Simple: makeup one of your own. Alphas life live on their own terms, and although we can guide you, it’s not for us to decide how you should live your life. That falls to you, Alpha.

And of course, please pick up the book. Would mean the world to us.

We really love this graphic, and hope you do, too. So please share it! We’d also love your comment on the i-graphic itself…

But we’d really love to know: what rules do YOU live your life by? Let’s get the TOP THREE rules.

Hey John, I'm new to your site and really digging your content so far! Something that's helped me a lot as well is defining my Definite Major Purpose in life. Knowing what I'm all about and forming a strong, masculine identity around it. It has acted like a filter in my decision making process but I like how this infographic broke it down into bite-sized action list! Anyway, great post John!

Good points. These seem to focus a lot on taking charge of one's own life. I found an extremely interesting explanation of an Alpha Male in the sociological sense here. Thought you would enjoy: http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/alphabehavior.htm

#16 People are, generally , too stupid to realize just how truly ignorant they really are. #17 Never go anywhere that you are considered a source of food. #18 Some people should where some stuff and some people shouldn't. and so on, and so on, and so on!

    1. Accept the 'bad' you and don't waste your time feeling guilty about it. 2. Don't do something so other would notice, do it because you want to. 3. Never have a plan B. Fall, and fall hard, so that you can learn to pick yourself up and work on a better plan A.

    I. Always trust your gut and be true to yourself and your own inspiration. Take responsibility. II. We are all human. Don't judge - surround yourself with the right people for you. III. Joy is contagious and happiness grows when you share it.

Roman, reading the book (the Heroes Journey is indeed an interesting way to see things!), I missed a reference to the study of IF in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that you cited you participate. Can you share a link to it? It would be nice to see the actual paper and conclusions. Also, how I can find the bonus material? Sheers!

Not that it couldn't be used as-is, but the formatting of this could be tweaked to make an excellent computer desktop background.

Hey Roman - bought the book on Kindle and I am enjoying it. Here's a couple of my rules: - Always praise in public and offer correction in private. This rule is preached in military leadership courses, but is applicable in most areas of life. - Say something nice about someone (particularly an employee) in front of their wife or child. Many people have thankless jobs and appreciate some recognition in front of those who they care about.

Never be afraid to ask questions; asking a "stupid" question is better than making assumptions. This is especially important when talking with alleged authority figures. "You have to pay this fine and/or go to jail." "Are you talking to me?" "Who is 'you'?"

Hey Roman - just curious why a woman wouldn't benefit from the diet and exercise piece of this book. I can't imagine our testosterone would increase so much as to cause any real problems...am I wrong? Should we expect a deeper voice and increased body hair if we do jump on board with the workouts? Just wondering!

Bought the book, would love to see the bonuses. Did my first morning on an empty stomach.30 minute interval on stairmaster, then to the gym for weights. Interesting. Stomach growling the whole time LOL. I've been in fitness since I was 12 years old; then a trainer; and now turning 50 this year. Have kept my same bodyweight and waste since college, but for some ungodly reason, want to get just a little tighter. Probably 9%. 6' 187lbs. Look forward to seeing if your methods can take me to the next level. Mike

John, Hoping to hear back from you. Question: If we are already at a fairly high level, and don't want to lose weight, just tighten up a tad like I mentioned before, should we still follow your program, or do we take a modified route? I don't want to get skinny. AT 6' 187 and about 9% I just really want to get that last remaining fat around my waist, and lower back. I'm very picky, as most guys would think I'm good-to-go. Your thoughts would be much appreciated John! Thanks, Mike P.S. I did buy your book and am halfway through it.

Know when to quit...then do it...gracefully. I know, that runs counter to all the self improvement advice out there. Many things are not in your best interests. You never know for sure until you actually dig in and try. Things can change for the worse over time. Make the best effort you can, be alert to how things are changing, but if you're not getting the result, or it's just not working on your terms, then it's time to let it go.
